Silver Gilt Medal at Hampton Court for garden with Enviromat

Congratulations to Ian Rochead who used Enviromat sedum matting to create a living green wall in his show garden and won a Silver Gilt medal at Hampton Court flower show

Ians garden was entitled Urbanise and made fabulous use of a small space by incorporating a raised deck with a green wall to disguise the storage area beneath it.  The walls of the storage area were clad in Enviromat to maximise the number of plants that could be fitted into the garden.

Embedded into the green wall was a water feature bringing movement and sound to the garden.

Ian chose to use Enviromat for his green wall because it is grown on to a superstrong backing with nylon loops for extra strength.  Ian was also attracted to its texture and its long flowering season. However, creating a green wall from sedum matting is not as simple as Ian has made it look, it requires a lot of thought and planning.  Angela Lambert from Enviromat explains; "sedum plants are reknowned for their drought tolerance but they do still need a water supply of some sort.  If the soil is too dry they cannot survive long term and if it's too wet they will drown.  On a steep slope or a vertical wall its important to get the irrigation just right"
